ICMC Europe joins Christian organisations in warning against an EU “return at all costs” approach

26 March 2026

A joint statement raises serious concerns about the European Parliament’s position on the EU Return Regulation and its impact on human dignity and fundamental rights.

On 26 March 2026, ICMC Europe joined six Christian organisations representing Churches and faith-based agencies across Europe in issuing a joint statement on the European Parliament’s position on the proposed EU Return Regulation.

In the statement, we express deep concern that the current direction of EU return policy places increased emphasis on forced returns, detention, and punitive enforcement, while weakening human rights safeguards and alternatives to return.

The statement warns that the position adopted by the European Parliament risks undermining human dignity, fundamental rights, and legal protections for people facing return decisions. Among the most troubling elements are the expansion of detention, including for children and families; the prioritisation of forced return over voluntary return; weakened legal remedies; reduced independent monitoring of forced returns; and the possibility of so-called “return hubs” outside the EU.

As trilogue negotiations begin, the Christian organisations also raise concern about possible intrusive investigative measures that could further erode rights, increase racial profiling, and discourage undocumented people from accessing essential services such as healthcare and humanitarian support.

Together, the signatories call on EU decision-makers to reject a “return at all costs” approach and to ensure that migration policies remain grounded in compassion, justice, respect for human dignity, and the rule of law.

ICMC Europe stands with its partners in calling for EU legislation that protects fundamental rights, upholds democratic values, and offers humane and sustainable solutions for people in vulnerable situations.
